After their inauguration in July, 1987, in Leuven, Belgium, these workshops
have been held twice more in Leuven, once in Helsinki, and five times at the
Institute for Behavioral Genetics, Boulder, Colorado. Each has been
tremendously successful (and oversubscribed). Papers resulting from the
inaugural workshop were published in a Special Issue of Behavior Genetics: Twin
methodology using LISREL, 19(1), 1989. The course material from the previous
workshops has now been published as a methodology handbook by Neale, M. C.,
Cardon, L. R., & 11 contributing authors as Methodology for Genetic Studies of
Twins and Families, Dordrecht, The Netherlands: Kluwer Academic Press, 1992.
The next workshop in Europe will be held again in Leuven, Belgium during the
second and third week of September 1998, with Bob Vlietinck and Martine Thomis
as local hosts. This course will have introductory and advanced sessions.
During the first week, we will introduce statistical methods for the analysis
of twin and family data using both the Mx script language and the graphical
interface. The focus of the second week will be on QTL analysis and linkage.
Different software packages such as SAGE and Genehunter will be introduced.
Those interested in an introductory workshop in the USA may want to consider
the 10th International Workshop on Methodology of Twin and Family Studies to be
held in Boulder, Colorado, the first week of March 1998, with David Fulker and
John Hewitt as local hosts.
The provisional faculty roster for the Leuven workshop includes:
L. Eaves [Academic Director], C. MacLean, H. Maes, W. Nance, M. Neale
Richmond, VA, USA
A. Heath St. Louis, MO, USA
N. Martin Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
D. Boomsma Amsterdam, The Netherlands
D. Fulker, J. Hewitt, S. Cherny Boulder, CO, USA
R. Elston Cleveland, OH, USA
N. Risch New Haven, Conn, USA
C. Amos Houston, TX, USA
L. Kruglyak Cambridge, MA, USA
L. Cardon Sequana Therapeutics
J. Meyer Millenium Pharmaceuticals Inc.
The course will include: use of twins in genetic analysis; summarizing
variation; path analysis; univariate twin analysis; between group
heterogeneity; multivariate twin analysis; categorical data; multiple
raters; sibling effects; developmental models; power analysis; twin-parent
models; biometrical genetics; candidate loci; interval mapping; sib pair
methods; quantitative trait loci (QTL); missing data; ascertainment and
complex phenotypes. Hands-on analysis will be emphasized employing
networked computers.
