Hi

While relatively little BG funding comes from NSF, and while emergency
shelters are a good cause, it seems unwise to set this precedent of
cutting NSF research funds. Please help oppose the Bruce Vento (D-MN)
and Mark Sanford (R-SC) amendments by calling your representative.

Dear Colleagues:

When the bill to fund the National Science Foundation (called the VA-HUD-Independent Agencies appropriations bill) comes to the floor of the House for a vote tomorrow, it is expected that two amendments are going to be offered that would do severe damage to the National Science Foundation.

One amendment is expected to be offered by Representative Bruce Vento (D-MN). That amendment would transfer $107 million from NSF to Housing and Urban Development to pay for emergency shelters.

A second amendment is to be offered by Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC). It would simply cut the research budget of NSF by $200 million.

While it is hard to oppose emergency shelters, it doesn't follow that research which also results in a variety of public benefits should be cut.

If you oppose having NSF research funding cut, your representative needs to hear from you immediately. Here is how you do that. Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121. Tell the operator you want to be connected with the office of Representative <your representative's name>. When the receptionist answers the phone, say that you would like to talk to, or leave a message for, the staffer who works on science issues. Then simply say that you are a voter in the Congress person's district. You support National Science Foundation funding and request that the representative vote against the Vento and Sanford amendments to the VA-HUD bill because passage of those amendments would hurt research. That's all you need to do, but you need to do it quickly. And please pass this note to others around the country so that the call-in campaign will reach all representatives before the vote tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Dave Johnson Executive Director Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences
