- The annual business meeting of the members of the Behavior Genetics Association, a
corporation not for profit, duly organized and existing under and by virtue of the laws of
the State of Illinois, United States of America, was convened in the Adirondack C/D
rooms of the Radisson Hotel, Burlington, Vermont, USA at 4:0 pm on the 30th day of
June 2000.
Those attending constituted a committee as a whole, and signed a record sheet indicating
their attendance at the meeting. President Rose opened the meeting. He acknowledged
the passing, during the past year, of J. Paul Scott, past President and Dobzhansky
awardee, and two influential psychiatric geneticists, George Winokur, a charter member
of BGA, and Seymour S. Kety.
- Upon motion duly moved, seconded and carried, the minutes of the 1999 Behavior
Genetics Association business meeting were approved as written.
- The secretary's report was given. By provision of the by-laws of the Association, the
Secretary is instructed to submit by mail ballot to the full membership of the Association
the names of those nominated to be candidates for offices becoming vacant. This was
done, with the notice that ballots were to be returned for tabulation by February 1, 2000.
Election to office requires a plurality of those members voting with ties to be broken by
lot. Tabulation of the votes received resulted in the election of Matt McGue as President-
Elect, and Carol Prescott as Member-at-Large for Associate Members. Upon motion duly
moved, seconded and carried, the election results were accepted. Written notification to
members of election results, as required by the by-laws, is fulfilled via these minutes
furnished to all members. Accordingly, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors
of the Behavior Genetics Association at the close of the meeting will be:
- John Hewitt, President
- Matt McGue, President-Elect
- Richard Rose, Past-President
- Hermine Maes, Secretary
- Pam Madden, Treasurer
- Carol Prescott, Member-at-Large
- Jennifer Harris, Member-at-Large
- Irwin Waldman, Member-at-Large
Upon motion duly moved, seconded and carried, the Secretary's Report was approved as
submitted by Secretary Hermine Maes.
- The Treasurer's report was submitted by Pamela Madden (see attached). The treasurer
reported a similar balance in the financial status of the society. The Vancouver meeting
made a profit of about $6000. However, dues payments are down and efforts will be
made through the BGA website to improve the payment of dues. Upon motion duly
moved, seconded and carried, the Treasurer's report was approved as submitted.
- The Membership report was also submitted by Pamela Madden. Only 56% of members
are current on dues, which hopefully will be improved by tracking people down by email.
The treasurer reported that the active membership roster consisted of 395 members, of
whom 275 are Full members, 98 are Associate members, and 22 are Retired members.
This represents a net loss to the society of 29 members since the previous business
meeting in 1999, with 27 new members and 74 members who were dropped from the
active roster for non-dues payment. 275 of the members reside in North America, and
120 reside in other continents. Upon motion duly moved, seconded and carried, the
Membership's report was approved as submitted.
- The program committee report was given by John Hewitt. A total of 100 presentations
were made at the meeting, including 36 posters, 64 oral presentations including
symposium talks. In addition, there were an invited address and a presidential address.
The program included 5 symposia and 7 paper sessions.
- President Rose reported that the Executive Committee, in its constitutional role as a
nomination committee, was nominating the following members for the offices indicated:
- President-Elect: Nancy Pedersen and Hill Goldsmith
- Secretary: Michael Pogue-Geile and Rick Viken
- Member-at-Large (Regular Members): Caroline Van Baal and Marianne Wamboldt
President Rose asked if there were nominations from the floor. Members were reminded
that nominations from the floor required the support of five members in good standing.
There being none, upon motion duly moved, seconded, and carried, nominations were
closed. The Secretary was instructed to submit the slate of nominees to the membership
by mail ballot.
- The local host report was given by Jim Hudziak. There were a total of 125 registrants at
the meeting, of which 90 pre-registered and 35 registered on site.
President Rose expressed thanks for the superb meeting that Jim had organized.
- Norman Henderson reported as Executive Editor of Behavior Genetics. He indicated that
the journal received 51 submissions, plus 10 for the special December issue, since the last
BGA meeting, slightly down from the previous year. The outright rejection rate is
approximately 10%. The journal's policy is to work with authors through revisions rather
than reject a paper and then invite resubmission of a revision. Currently about 40% of
submissions to BG are electronic. The transition resulting from the purchase of Plenum
journals by Kluwer continued to pose some difficulties for the journal, resulting primarily
from personnel turnover in the Kluwer/Plenum journals department. Norm announced
his intention retire from his duties as executive editor in 2001. The BGA Executive
Committee has appointed Norm to chair a committee to search for a new BG executive
editor. Suggestions for search committee members are welcome. Based on the 1998 SSI
impact factors (latest) BG has an impact factor of 3.229 and ranks 26/103 on the Genetics
& Heredity list, ahead of such journals as Human Genetics, Annals of Human Genetics
and not far behind Evolution and Genomics. The first Fulker Award will be awarded to a
paper or papers published in Volume 29 (1999) of Behavior Genetics. The editor
requested that the language of the award legislation be changed slightly, to substitute
'particularly meritorious paper' for 'best paper'. The change was approved by the
members in attendance.
- Thalia Eley reported as local host for the 2001 meeting , to be held July 8-11, 2001 at
Peterhouse College in Cambridge, England, immediately following the ISTS Twin
Congress which will be held in London from July 4-7. The college is a 5 minute walk
from the center of town. 60 rooms are available in the college; in addition a block of
rooms is reserved in 3 hotels. BGA will organize a 3-day program of scientific sessions
on July 9-11 , with on opening reception on Sunday night (July 8) and a banquet on
Wednesday night (July 11). A preliminary webpage will be available soon and
announced on BGAnet.
- No definite offers to host future meetings after the Cambridge meeting have been
received. The Hawai offer has been withdrawn. It is suggested to plan some future
meetings, when possible and convenient, in conjunction with the American Psychological
Society or the Society for Psychiatric Genetics or, as in 1999, with ISSID. After the
business meeting, an offer was received from Marianne Wamboldt/John Hewitt to host
the 2002 meeting in Colorado, with Keystone Resort or Boulder as possible venues.
- There were no reports from other committees.
- Other Business.
- Marti Hahn talked about BG Archives and reported that the film by John Fuller can be
used in academic settings, but that special equipment is required.
- Jared B. Jobe, as representative of NIA, reported on a new program announcement on
'Adult Developmental Perspective' which funds RO1's, PO1's, and foreign components,
training grants or supplements to existing training grants, career awards, and secondary
data analysis.
- Naimah Weinberg, as representative of NIDA, reported on several program
announcements relevant to BG, which can be found in the Institute's website.
The president thanked the outgoing members of the Executive Committee: Norm
Henderson who served as president, Deborah Finkel as Member-at-Large for their
outstanding efforts.
Respectfully submitted,
Hermine H. Maes
Secretary
